Employers have several responsibilities for fire safety in the workplace. These responsibilities include:
Risk Assessment: Employers must assess the risks of fire in the workplace and take measures to reduce them. This includes identifying potential hazards, evaluating the likelihood of a fire occurring, and considering the consequences of a fire. Ensuring a competent person carries out a Fire Risk Assessment of your workplace, is integral to this process.
Fire Detection and Warning Systems: Employers must provide fire detection and warning systems such as smoke detectors, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers. These systems should be tested regularly to ensure they are functioning correctly.
Evacuation Plan: Employers must have an evacuation plan in place that outlines how employees can safely evacuate the building in the event of a fire. This should include designated assembly points outside the building where employees can safely gather.
Training: Employers must provide fire safety training to all employees. This should include information on how to prevent fires, how to use fire extinguishers, and how to safely evacuate the building or site in the event of a fire.
Maintenance: Employers must ensure that all fire safety equipment is maintained and in good working condition. This includes testing and inspecting equipment regularly, repairing or replacing faulty equipment, and keeping equipment free from obstructions.
Record Keeping: Employers must keep records of all fire safety-related activities, including risk assessments, equipment testing and inspection, and training. These records should be available for inspection by regulatory authorities
